Spring Skiing in the Canadian Rockies – Banff’s Secret Season

Whilst many Canadian ski resorts close their doors in early April, here at SkiBig3, Spring skiing is just getting started! Spring in the Canadian Rockies is truly one of our best kept secrets… well not anymore! In April and May we see warmer days, and longer afternoons, less congested slopes, fun events and to the surprise of many – we have some of our best snow.

If you’re hoping to ski/snowboard in Banff & Lake Louise, but don’t know when to come; here are all the reasons to travel in Spring.

Experience Winter and Summer Activities in the same Day

A unique experience only a few places in the world can offer, is snowboarding, and mountain biking all in the same day. April through May you can head up to either Lake Louise Ski Resort, Banff Sunshine or Mt Norquay for the morning and then come down to town and go biking. Due to the altitude of the SkiBig3 mountains, the snow often holds on the mountain and melts down in town; offering a mix of both winter and summer activities.

Powder days

While most Canadian ski resorts see their powders dumps in January/February – here at SkiBig3, we get some of our best snow in Spring (April). On average, the resorts receive around two days of snowfall per week. The historical average snowfall across each of the resorts per week in April is around 18cm (7") for  Banff Sunshine, 18cm (7") for Lake Louise Ski Resort, and 13cm (5") for Mt. Norquay.

Get ready for some powder turns, face shots and a whole lot of fun!

Warmer temperatures and softer snow

As we move into spring, you can forget the heated socks and insulated ski jackets. With warmer, longer days ahead; you’re not going to need them. The average temperature in April is around 4 degrees Celsius (39.2 Fahrenheit). With average highs of 11 degrees Celsius (51.8 Fahrenheit)and lows of -2 degrees Celsius (28.4 Fahrenheit). You can enjoy longer, uninterrupted days out on the slopes.

The longer hours of sun also means softer more forgiving snow. As the suns shines and we continue to see increased snowfall, the snow transforms. You can ride down a mountain of smooth and buttery terrain.
